Like / Dislike: nicole lavelle

nicole lavelle

Likes/Dislikes asks interesting individuals to create two lists: one of their likes, one of dislikes. The feature is based on two things: an excerpt fromSusan Sontag’s As Consciousness Is Harnessed to Flesh: Journals and Notebooks, 1964-1980 and another from Roland Barthes’ autobiography (trans. Richard Howard, 1977). The exercise, while gratuitous, is rooted in ideas of pattern, construction, specificity, and memory.

Nicole Lavelle makes work with people, paper, language, and landscape. She is a graphic designer, or an artist, depending on who you might ask. She prefers collaborating, and she lives in California.

Health food co-ops in small towns, clean sheets, babies, California, John Steinbeck, Text Edit, medium-sized dogs, fog, the TV show GIRLS, invisible socks, swapping travel stories, Catholic mass, novels by women, lavender, rosemary, being alone in the desert, olives, screenshots, reading interview conversations between two smart people, darkness so thick I can’t see my hand in front of my face, beet juice, knowing what street people live on, hot honey lemon water, when my mom texts me, church incense, the band Mount Eerie, bare butts near a fire, overuse of “quotation marks,” cinematic car rides, being early, sitting shotgun.

War, talking about war, talking about art, LARPing, self-deprecating public speakers, being cold, being hot, Facebook, theoretical reading, vague plans, California, interstates, when my boyfriend is on his phone and I’m trying to talk to him, Fridays, driving in the city, pancakes, lens scratches, Guy Fieri, deciphering the tone of a text message, pictures of myself, horror films, tomato juice. Being late, missing deadlines, making decisions, indecision, pro-and-con lists, leaving.
