Likes / Dislikes: Joanna McClure

Likes/Dislikes asks interesting individuals to create two lists: one of their likes, one of dislikes.

The feature is based on two things: an excerpt from Susan Sontag’s As Consciousness Is Harnessed to Flesh: Journals and Notebooks, 1964-1980 and another from Roland Barthes’ autobiography (trans. Richard Howard, 1977).
The exercise, while gratuitous, is rooted in ideas of pattern, construction, specificity, and memory. See more Likes / Dislikes posts here.

This post was published in tandem with an ongoing collaboration with Alldayeveryday.

Joanna McClure is a New York-based photographer whose commercial work focuses on still life images. Walking a line between commercial and fine art, her work is inspired by color and material. She has been shown in numerous editorials, advertisements, and gallery showings—most recently, a group show at 511 Gallery in Chelsea, New York.

When not in her studio or at the playground with her daughter, she will most likely be found scouring the bookstores for inspiration.

– Organization
– Oreo cookie flavored frozen yogurt from Red Mango (preferably with Reese’s peanut butter cups on top)
– When all the clothes are put away
– My daughter’s drawings/sculptures
– My husband’s drawings
– Earl Grey tea
– Len Lye films
– The texture of freshly painted nails
– Flowers, specifically peonies, poppies or ranunculus
– Looking at interior design magazines, or really any magazine for that matter
– Hand-pulled noodles
– The thought of being on a beach with my family
– Writing things down
– Turning off the power on my cell phone, a rare occurrence

– Doing the same thing time after time
– People stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to look at their phone
– Entitlement
– Moments with lack of purpose or drive, in myself and others
– Things out of place or without a place…  (god, I sound so anal)
– Personal space invaders
– When there is nothing to go see at the movies
– How everyone who gives a TED-Talk speaks ridiculously fast for no apparent reason
– Seeing someone on the street treating their children poorly
– Misspelled words on signs
